Videos

Two neurons · 38 s
Two hippocampal neurons in orange and blue, each with its own tone, as the path builds and the camera sweeps into 3D.
One neuron, start to finish · 28 s
A single neuron's place field emerging lap by lap, with a tone for every spike.
Two neurons, from overhead · 33 s
The same two neurons with the camera kept overhead the whole time.
Speed test · 7 s
Fast-forwarding through the session as laps pile up.
Raster test: 3D view, fast, 30 s window · 3 s
The 3D path with a scrolling raster of all neurons underneath (no sound).
Raster test: all neurons, accumulating · 10 s
Overhead path with a raster of all neurons that builds up over time.
Raster test: all neurons, 15 s window · 10 s
A scrolling 15-second raster of all neurons.
Raster test: all neurons, 30 s window · 10 s
A scrolling 30-second raster.
Raster test: one neuron, accumulating · 10 s
The raster for a single neuron, building up.
Raster test: 10 s window · 10 s
A 10-second raster window.
Floor test · 7 s
The rat's tracked path drawn onto the overhead video of the maze floor, then on its own (no sound).

Turn the sound on.

What it is

The rat's position over a session is drawn as a 3D trace: the maze floor in two dimensions, and time stretching out along the third. Each neuron's spikes are dots on that trace, so a place cell shows up as a column of dots stacked over the same spot, lap after lap. The animation builds the trace in time, sweeps the camera around it, and plays a tone for each spike.
