Full write-up · very much under construction

This project grew big enough that I made a detailed post for it. It's a work in progress. Most of the text so far was generated with AI, and it isn't good: I'm replacing it with my own writing. Some of the visuals are closer to ready.

What it is

A deep dive into the board game Blokus: what perfectly symmetric games look like, which symmetries are actually possible, and how to search for them. It started as a plan to train a self-play agent (no AlphaZero-style Blokus agent had been published) and turned into a combinatorics project.

How it works

An exact search solver written in C, plus MATLAB tools for generating, verifying, and visualizing finished games. A "symmetry zoo" catalogs which symmetry types a full four-player game can have.

The full story

The symmetry zoo, the exact search, and the games themselves, animated, are in the full write-up.
